Mary started practicing yoga as a child with her mother in the 1970's. She was also a competitive gymnast and dancer until she was 22 years of age. She dabbled in many sports as well as in formal education. She has a B. A. in Psychology and an M. S. in Biology. Always looking to learn something new, she has taken many courses and earned many certificates in fitness and wellness. Besides practicing yoga and pilates, Mary enjoys climbing, hiking, skiing and training in the Sierra.
Mary is certified by NASM as a Corrective Exercise Specialist.
The primary objective of Corrective Exercise is to optimize movement quality. It helps enhance performance, results, injury resistance, movement efficiency, and recovery. By using static, movement, and mobility assessments the practitioner will be able to determine which muscles are underactive and which are overactive. This information is then used to help the client learn how to inhibit(self massage)and lengthen (stretch) the overactive muscles and activate (isolated strengthening) and integrate (dynamic strengthening)the underactive muscles. Hence allowing for the client to enhance their quality of movement.

Mary is certified by NASM as a Stretching and Flexibility Coach. With the help of static and mobility assessments, the practitioner will determine where the body appears to shift, bend, tilt, or rotate and which fascial nets are responsible. Functional movement patterns are then assessed and an individualized integrated stretch program is designed that may include self-myofascial techniques, specific corrective stretches, dynamic stretches for warm-ups, and recovery stretches for cool downs.
